Why Quiet Can Feel Uncomfortable at First
May 26, 2025
We often say we want peace and quiet.
Then, when we finally get it, we reach for our phones.
We turn on the television. We check messages. We look for something to fill the space.
Quiet can feel strange when we are used to constant stimulation. A busy life creates a kind of background hum….emails, conversations, responsibilities, opinions, decisions and endless little demands on our attention.
When that noise disappears, even briefly, we may notice thoughts and feelings that were easier to ignore while everything was moving.
This does not mean quiet is bad for us.
It may simply mean we are not used to hearing ourselves so clearly.
At the lakeside, there are moments when very little appears to be happening. Water moves. Leaves shift. A bird calls somewhere beyond the trees.
Nothing is asking for an immediate response.
At first, this kind of stillness can feel unfamiliar. After a while, though, the mind begins to soften. The body releases some of the tension it has been carrying. Things that felt complicated can start to look simpler.
Quiet does not always give us instant answers.
Sometimes it gives us enough space to realise which questions are actually ours.
You do not need to force yourself into silence for hours. Begin gently.
Sit outside for five minutes without reaching for your phone. Drink a cup of tea without doing something else at the same time. Take a short walk without filling your ears with information.
Let the quiet meet you gradually.
One thing to remember: Quiet is not empty. It is often where we begin to notice what has been drowned out.
If life has felt particularly noisy lately, Reiki, sound and lakeside sessions offer a gentle way to slow the pace and settle back into yourself.
